Full course description

Date: 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 February 2026

Modality:  Online

Duration: 5 days

Price: $1,800 (incl. GST)

Short course structure and topics covered:

This course covers many commonly used statistical procedures from Chi-Square to Factor Analysis. It defines research methodologies so that participants can match their research designs with their research needs; that is, when and how causal relationships are to be determined and, in social research, how attitudes and behaviours are to be evaluated and reported upon.

The course is taught from an applied perspective with many examples, and questions are encouraged. Participants are assisted in practising the procedures during the course using their choice of SPSS or Jamovi (a freely downloadable, menu-driven stats package). No prior knowledge of either package is required.

Participants will be exposed to a variety of research scenarios and to the logic of statistical procedure selection and application. Qualitative researchers wanting to gain quantitative skills would find that this course suits their needs well, as would quantitative researchers wanting to broaden their understanding across procedures.

This course will enable participants to read and understand literature where the covered procedures are reported, to select appropriate statistical procedures for research, run them in the software, and report results from them, with an informed base of understanding.

Day one: Introduction to quantitative research

Day two: Frequency-based statistics

Day three: Statistical tests of differences

Day four: Prediction, variance explanation, and data reduction

Day five: Statistical power and techniques for increasing it

Learning outcomes:

The course will expose participants to a variety of research scenarios and give them the tools to select and apply the apporiate statistical procedure, and to write results based on the analyses.

The course will enable participants to read and understand literature where the covered procedures are reported with an informed base of understanding.

Who should attend? Any entry requirements?

No prior knowledge is required. Postgraduate students embarking on analytical projects would be well-placed to attend, and researchers in the qualitative space that would like to gain qualative skills would also find that this course suits their needs well. Anyone wanting to broaden and/or deenen their understanding of quantitative techniques would benefit.
