Effective spoken communication means being able to express your ideas clearly, confidently and concisely. In this course, you will learn essential communication skills to make sure the message you want to communicate gets across effectively. This involves the key skills of listening, flexing, questioning and asserting. Using an interactive approach, participants will undertake several practical exercises to apply their learning into live situations.
This two-day course is delivered across two weeks to enable participants to put into practice what they have learnt in each session.
Short course structure and topics covered:
This course will involve a mixture of theory and practical application.
Day One
- Define what effective communication is all about and explore the key skills of listening, flexing and rapport building.
- Learn to apply ‘seek first to understand and then be understood’.
- Understand the essential principles and components that govern effective communication.
- Assess key questions to consider before any communication event.
- Practice three important listening skills to improve your effectiveness.
- ‘Flex’ in order to connect with people who have different and similar communication styles to you.
Between Day One and Day Two
- Practice new skills on one or two key issues identified during Day One.
- Identify beliefs about communication that you may need to change.
Day Two
This day focuses on expanding each participant’s effectiveness.
The day will cover:
- Using powerful questioning techniques.
- Realising the impact perception has on our relationships with others.
- Practicing the three steps for “asserting your voice”.
- Analysing your personal competency as a communicator.
Practical exercises will explore:
- Questioning.
- Awareness of perceptual filters.
- How to be more assertive.
Throughout the two days participants will reflect on their learning and record specific actions they want to put into practice after the course. These are shared to reinforce the learning.
