Participants are introduced to the purpose, methods, and practical application of economic evaluation in health. The course will provide an understanding of why economic evaluations are undertaken, the different approaches available, and the strengths and limitations of each method. Through guided discussion and applied examples, participants learn how to identify, measure, and value both resource use and health outcomes, and how to interpret the role and limitations of Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) within decision-making frameworks.

Building on this technical grounding, the course supports participants to critically assess the role and limitations of QALYs, interpret cost-effectiveness findings, and evaluate how economic evidence is used in real-world decision-making. Particular attention is given to the New Zealand context, enabling participants to examine how economic evaluations shape policy, prioritisation, and investment decisions across the health system. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the analytical skills and critical perspective needed to engage confidently with economic evidence and its application in the health sector.
