This short course, held over two consecutive days, provides participants an opportunity to develop essential skills and knowledge in working with and caring for children with serious illness and palliative care needs in Aotearoa New Zealand. Sessions will cover the fundamentals of paediatric palliative care and a suite of symptom management sessions reflecting both psychosocial and physical symptoms.  

The course will include interactive lectures, case based learning and small group sessions. 

Participants will have the opportunity to connect with colleagues caring for children with palliative care needs across their region and establish relationships with clinicians with specialist skills and experience working in Paediatric Palliative Care.  

Resources will also be provided to support participant’s ongoing development in the future.   

The teaching team is comprised of Paediatric Palliative Care specialists across nursing, medical and allied health disciplines, along with whānau who have lived experience of receiving palliative care services.

  • Self-care for professionals

Learning outcomes:   

  1. Develop an awareness of Paediatric Palliative Care in Aotearoa – need, core components of care delivery & philosophical underpinnings 
  2. Identify children with serious illness who may benefit from integration of a palliative approach in their care 
  3. Develop confidence in the provision of palliative care to children with serious illness and their whānau
  4. Identify & challenge the current inequities that exist for children with palliative care needs in Aotearoa 

Who should attend? / any entry requirements?   

This course is open to anyone working with children with serious illnesses, this includes those working in community setting, health professionals (nursing, medical and allied health).  There are no entry requirements to attend.
