This course provides participants with a comprehensive introduction to the safe and effective techniques for intravenous (IV) cannulation and phlebotomy. Key topics include fundamental vein anatomy, patient and practitioner safety, appropriate equipment selection, procedural steps, and the management of potential complications. The programme begins with an introductory lecture featuring audiovisual materials and an expert step-by-step demonstration, followed by supervised hands-on practice using specialised IV training arms under the guidance of an experienced clinical tutor.
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate of attendance. Please note that this certificate does not confer authorisation to perform IV cannulation or phlebotomy in clinical settings. This must be granted by the participant’s employer or clinical director. Attaining full clinical competency requires further training, supervised practice, and ongoing hands-on experience.
Learning venous cannulation and phlebotomy is an interactive process that requires both a solid theoretical foundation and the development of practical skills. This course includes an online pre-course preparation module and forms part of the blended IV cannulation and phlebotomy programme offered by the University of Auckland.
The practical workshop provides participants with the essential knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to perform IV cannulation and phlebotomy safely within their workplace.
