Full course description
The Science for Surgeons Course is a professional development programme designed for participants preparing for the RACS Generic Surgical Sciences Examination (GSSE). The course runs annually, from about late January through early September, and is convened by the University’s Auckland, Department of Surgery and Department of Anatomy and Medical Imaging. It combines weekly online lectures with a one-week intensive residential component to cover core scientific foundations relevant to surgical candidates.
Content-wise, participants can expect the curriculum to be closely aligned with the Surgical Education and Training (SET) Generic Surgical Sciences Examination syllabus. The weekly lectures (approximately one hour in the evenings) are delivered online via Zoom and are taught by Associate Professor Ali Mirjalili (Editor of Last’s Anatomy 2019, revised) in conjunction with practicing surgical specialists. The residential week, held at the University of Auckland, Grafton campus, focuses on intensive instruction in Anatomy and Physiology, thereby consolidating the scientific knowledge that participants will need for the GSSE.
