Full course description
This short course is an introductory history-based account of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and The Treaty of Waitangi, how those texts came about, their differences, and what happened after Te Tiriti was signed.
The focus is on the relationship between two different meaning worlds: the Māori world and the world/s that came afterwards to this land. The course is designed to help participants understand aspects of our shared story and to consider the relevance of Te Tiriti today. Participants will gain increased confidence to engage in treaty-related conversations at work and elsewhere.

Each Module includes text, videos, questions/issues to think about, recommended reading, glossary, and a fun quiz to check your learning.
Short course benefits and learning outcomes:
After completing these online modules, we would expect you to be able to:
- Have gained solid historical information about Te Tiriti o Waitangi and The Treaty of Waitangi, and what happened before and after the treaty signings in 1840
- Understand how and why Te Tiriti and The Treaty, and the ‘two worlds’ they represent, are relevant today
- Know more about relationality and the idea of relationships across ‘worlds
- Feel more confident in treaty-related discussions
Who should attend?
The course is aimed at anyone who wants a reliable, introductory, history-based overview of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, related aspects of our history, and their relevance today. Participants do not need prior experience or knowledge of New Zealand history or politics.
