Description

 

During this course, participants with minimal to no ultrasound scanning experience will learn the basics of ultrasound scanning so that when they return to their clinical centres, they are familiar with ultrasound equipment manipulation, ultrasound image optimisation, gain introductory knowledge of the female pelvis and DVT ultrasound and are able to perform a basic ultrasound scan of the abdomen. This is a full-time 6-week course delivered by experts at the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, University of Auckland.

Short course structure and topics covered: 

 

The 6-week full-time intensive short course will cover ultrasound imaging of all major organs in the abdomen as well as an introduction to the female pelvis and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) ultrasound.

 

By the end of this short course participants should be able to:

 

  1. Perform a full general abdominal ultrasound scan
  2. Be competent in basic gynaecological ultrasound and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) scanning

 

Each day of the short course, there will be live scanning demonstrations, peer scanning, and lectures to cover basic imaging techniques, normal anatomy and physiology of the organs in the abdomen. This course will place an emphasis on the normal imaging of the abdomen.

 

A practical competency assessment will be conducted at the end of the short course. Each participant will be expected to complete a full normal Abdominal Ultrasound examination within a 45-minute period to obtain a certificate of completion.

 

The Ultrasound Intensive short course has a maximum of 9 participants.

 

Learning outcomes: 

 

During this 6-week full-time Ultrasound Intensive short course, you will learn how to:

 

  1. Use current technology to develop your technical skills in ultrasound scanning
  2. Conduct common ultrasound examinations that you might encounter in clinical practice

 

Who should attend? / Any entry requirements? 

 

To gain admission to the Ultrasound Intensive Short Course, you must:

 

  1. Have completed an undergraduate qualification in medical imaging or an approved undergraduate degree from a biomedical science-related field such as anatomy or physiology or a medical or allied health profession.  
  2. Be based in New Zealand or be able to travel and be in New Zealand for the duration of the course.
  3. An application is required to gain entry into this short course.
